Need help setting up rolled hems (Moderated by Deepika, Jacqui315)
Skill: Intermediate
Can you help me with rolled hem set up? I know I need to remove the left needle and it’s thread. I know to slide the front lever to “R”....but then what?! Not sure about settings on the screen beyond entering my fabric info (lightweight woven) and hitting auto. Seems like it can’t be that easy?
Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance!
This Users guide video on YouTube might help too, it appears to have good feedback. Other videos might help too.
I used to own a Janome Compulock which is very similar and the rolled hems were fabulous and I used that feature a LOT!
Hope this helps?

I have used YouTube quite a bit for learning but I like books best. I’ve had the 936 for a year and it has been so good to me. Threading isn’t exactly fun but once it gets going the results are always great!

Thank you for directing me to excellent resources!
Remember to slide the lever to R. I use tear away stabilizer when doing a very light fabric like chiffon. Do t pull unless you want a lettuce effect.
Viking recommends annual checkups at the dealer. Don't tell anybody, but I don't take my machines in that often, but they always run better after a checkup.

I am getting ready to sew Vogue 1178, which I think is a good first project for rolled hems because it does call for the lettuce effect, and there is a lot of ground to cover, so I think any mistakes will be hidden in the flounces. I have experience sewing with chiffon and silk, so I'm not too worried about working with it, though of course it requires patience - I really appreciate the tip for tear away stabilizer, I'll get some this weekend.
I've downloaded the manual, which I didn't have before I started this thread! so I'll be reading that. I am excited to finally utilize another feature of this crazy machine!

A few months ago I took it apart & have it a regrease (with tri-flow clear synthetic) & it is much smoother since then. I do my own maintenance if possible.
Makes a great stitch with little fuss & I love the half speed option for tricky curves.

It’s not going well. It will go well for a while and then one of these things happens: the thread doesn’t attach to the fabric (just chains next to it), if I increase speed at all the thread gets nicked by something and looks bad.
I’ve hemmed about 1/4 of a skirt (after a whole morning of practice) and now the hem is chopped up, damaged, looks terrible.
I know I need to practice, but it seems like something is wrong. Especially when it nicks (cuts) the rolled edge and all the threads. I can’t find anything in the manual that I am doing wrong.
Oof! Learning curve. :(
