'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' sees the light. Wait a minute: didn't that game already exist? Yes, but not in the format that this week has emerged on the internet, and which shows how the title was originally conceived, finally discarded for demanding too much on the memory capacity of the Mega Drive cartridges. Now we can enjoy 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' as scheduled, but before we review what we officially knew about the game that hit the stores in 1994.
'Sonic the Hedgehog 3', the published version, was an adventure and platform game by Sega released in 1994 for its Mega Drive console. The saga of the successful blue hedgehog continues, whose previous installment dated back to 1992, and here Sonic and Tails, featured in the previous game, traveled to a floating island to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds stolen by Robotnik . There they will meet the island's guardian, Knuckles, who despite his appearance, similar to Sonic, is not a hedgehog, but an echidna.
The result was one of the classic Sega mascot games: it sold a million copies in the United States, and despite its excesses, it is considered one of the last absolute classics of the saga. However, its development was very bumpy: it started shortly after the launch of 'Sonic 2' and was initially intended as an isometric perspective game . A daring idea that would take shape a couple of years later, in 1996, with 'Sonic 3D Blast', the first (semi) three-dimensional adventure of the character that came out simultaneously on Mega Drive and Saturn and that, seen today, is not the most memorable .
The ambition of that game, as we will detail below, was excessive, and the time limitations and the limited space of the Mega Drive cartridges forced Sega to divide the project in two: 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' and 'Sonic & Knuckles' . With the latter, he put into practice the so-called 'lock-on technology', which allowed him to insert a cartridge on top of 'Sonic & Knuckles' and thus modify the combined games. For example, if almost any game prior to 'S&K' is inserted, a screen appears with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Robotnik indicating that nothing, but you also access a minigame based on the special levels of the Chaos Emeralds of the two games in which 'Sonic 3' was split.
More news is if 'Sonic 2' the game that is inserted in 'S&K'. Doing so unlocks Knuckles and kills Tails (as well as the two player option). The game remains identical but can be played as the echidna, which thanks to its abilities to plan and climb vertical obstacles, allows easier access to areas that were very complicated for Sonic. On the other hand, its speed and jumping power are lower than Sonic's, which can complicate things at certain points in the game, such as the final bosses.
However, what lock-on technology was really thought of was to combine 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' and 'Sonic & Knuckles', which were fused into a frankenstein called 'Sonic 3 & Knuckles'. This slightly changed the structure of the levels of the original games, allowed to play levels of 'Sonic 3' as Knuckles and those of 'Sonic & Knuckles' as Tails, and also allowed to record the progress in the latter . Combining the two cartridges through the lock-on is also the only way to get the Super Esseraldas through the special levels of 'Sonic & Knuckles', after collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds from 'Sonic 3'. Result: Playable Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails, all with special powers.
The real 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3'
Until now, two more or less confirmed legends orbited around the creation of the game, as is usually the case when development is so bumpy . One of them is that Michael Jackson had composed an exclusive soundtrack for the title. Roger Hector, director of the Sega Technical Institute (ephemeral North American incarnation of the Sonic Team and responsible for several games in the franchise), confirmed this in 2005. All traces of Jackson's compositions were removed after the first accusations of abuse, just in that time, although possibly the tape that the musician sent humming the songs is still on Sega.
The other legend obviously talks about what the 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' was originally like, with guesses partly generated by a preview published in the British magazine 'Sega Magazine' number 1 in 1993. While the North American part of the STI was in charge From 'Sonic Spinball', the Japanese half of the team started working with the Sega Virtua Processor chip in search of a 3D incarnation of Sonic. In fact, the intention was to title the game 'Sonic 3D'. After spending half of 1993 experimenting with this new vision, it was decided to go back to the origins of the franchise.

Why? Time was short: a commercial commitment with McDonalds prevented delaying the release date beyond February 1994, and the levels that had been designed were three times greater than those of 'Sonic 2'. Seeing that the cost of stuffing everything in a 34-megabit cartridge was unsustainable, the project was divided into the two games we know. And the original remained a matter of dreams and rumors until the game preservation communities Hidden Place and The Cutting Room Floor have unearthed a prototype of 'Sonic 3' that includes elements that were specified in the famous preview and that never reached the final version.

Those innovations consist, above all, in small details, but they include the Flying Battery zone and bosses that were seen in 'Sonic & Knuckles', as well as the Lava Reef zone. Also three incomplete bonus zones, data of bosses, objects and enemies, and an unpublished movement, which is already known as drop-dash and that consists of Sonic being able to accelerate immediately and without pauses as soon as he lands with a jump or a fall .
This new version also sheds some light on the subject of the Michael Jackson soundtrack: the music that appears in the last levels resembles the tracks of the PC port of 'Sonic 3' released in 1997, which was always believed to be it had been composed after the breakup with Jackson. This shows that they were not just replacement tracks, but were already in the first versions of the game.

This is a bit what this prototype offers, although you have in Hidden Palace an exhaustive list of all the differences with the 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' commercialized. The result does not radically change the history we know, but it is a real treasure for 16-bit archaeologists . A unique delicatessen for experts in the adventures of the Sega blue hedgehog.
