In anticipation for the upcoming Call of Duty WW2 release, we thought it would be exciting to look back at the 10 best Call of Duty maps ever.
May 15, 2020 Video game consoles have changed a great deal from their inception. Gone are the days of singularly focused, basic gaming. Today, the gaming console realm runs the gamut — from basic consoles that take you down memory lane to ultra portable gaming rigs to insanely powerful offerings for 4K HDR (high dynamic range) and virtual reality gaming. Choosing the best game console can be difficult. We made it easy by comparing Xbox One, PS4, Switch, and more in terms of games, power, and versatility.
We’ll start from the 10th best map and then work our way down to what we think could be one of the most iconic maps in Call of Duty ever.
#10 – Dome (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3)
Dome is a small map for COD MW3 that takes place in an abandoned NATO military outpost. The environment is set in the Middle East and the map almost entirely focuses on close quarter combat.
It was one of the best maps for players looking for a quick jump into some action.
#9 – Favela (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)
Favela is a moderately sized map that originally launched on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It later got a re-release on COD Ghosts. This map is based on the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The gameplay focuses on a number of multi-tiered buildings.
It was one of the first maps that managed to perfect the kind of multi-level combat that became popular in maps from Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare.
#8 – Estate (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)
Estate is another medium-sized map that got its debut on COD Modern Warfare 2. This map was set in the woodlands of the Georgian-Russian border.

Whilst there was a lot of open space in the wooded area, a lot of the gameplay would be based on the main house that could be found at the top of a hill. If your team could hold the house, you often had a good chance at winning the game.
#7 – Pipeline (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)
Pipeline is a large map designed for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The game is set in an abandoned pipeline complex in Ukraine.
The map managed to perfectly blend close ranged and long ranged combat. Players could choose to stick to the buildings for long ranged battles or visit the underground tunnels for more fast-paced close quarters action.
#6 – Crash (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)
If you wanted action, Crash was often the map you’d look for in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It’s a reasonably sized map, but nearly all of the action takes place in the center of the map surrounding a crashed helicopter.
There are so many narrow corridors and blind spots in Crash, which often lead to people heavily camping spots, but if you had fast reflexes, you could often run through the map tearing down players that just couldn’t as fast as you could.
#5 – Overgrown (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)
Overgrown was one of the largest maps for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Based on a farmland in Ukraine, players were able to use vegetation and hay bales as cover.
Because of the vast open terrain, Overgrown was one of the best maps in COD 4 for those looking to use snipers. If you stuck to the few buildings in Overgrown, you could often stick to using close quarter combat weapons instead.
#4 – Hijacked (Call of Duty: Black Ops 2)
Hijacked is without a doubt one of the most iconic maps in Call of Duty history. It’s arguably one of the best maps ever, but there are a few maps that deserve a spot ahead of Hijacked.
This map took place on a luxury yacht in international waters near France. The map was designed perfectly for intense fast-paced close quarters action. However, because of the two lanes either side of the yacht, there was some room for sniping too.
Hijacked received a remake on Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. The map was mostly the same, although it was based on a security VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft that hovered above Zurich in a fictional future in 2065.
#3 – Standoff (Call of Duty: Black Ops 2)

Based on a small town on the China and Kyrgyzstan border, Standoff offered a lot of opportunities for players, despite being quite a small map. It was, without a doubt, one of the most played maps in Call of Duty Black Ops, and was a good choice for Search and Destroy.
Standoff was perfectly split off into numerous sections – you could often stay in one of these sections and do well, or make a move across all areas of the maps and pick off enemies along the way.
#2 – Nuketown (Call of Duty: Black Ops)
Everybody loves Nuketown. Released in Call of Duty: Black Ops, Nuketown quickly became one of the most loved maps in the entire franchise.
Its close quarters combat offered some great gameplay, but it was the overall symmetric shape of the map that gave players a lot of room for some incredible close ranged sniping battles.
Since its inception on Call of Duty: Black Ops, Nuketown has had remakes for every other Black Ops game. It has also had a zombies version for Black Ops 2. Nukehouse was also developed as a smaller version for Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified on the PS Vita.
#1 – Rust (Modern Warfare 2)
Rust. What can we say? Rust was the place where arguments were settled. It was the perfect 1v1 map. If could win 1v1s in Rust back in the day, you were considered a god amongst men.
Rust was a very small map that offered some fairly intense close quarters action, but the open spaces between cover made it an exciting experience for players brave enough to use snipers in such a small area.
One of the most exciting things about Rust was getting some of the higher tiered kill streaks and wreaking havoc on other players. A well-timed AC130 or Stealth Bomber could often wipe out the entire enemy team on Rust.
Summary
Would you change this list in any way? If you would make changes to it, which maps would you move and which would you replace for other Call of Duty maps?
